Bug of the Week: Caterpillar Central

For some reason, our yard is caterpillar central this week. Here’s what we found in the last two days.

At least eight queen caterpillars on the milkweed plants.

This caterpillar is on the milkweed too, but it looks a bit different. It only has two pairs of black filaments, instead of three.

That’s because this one is a monarch caterpillar, not as common in the Phoenix area.

What’s this on the grapefruit? Looks like a bird dropping with a head.

That’s a young orange dog caterpillar, which turns into a beautiful giant swallowtail butterfly. I have an older post with more information about those. In that year we found caterpillars in August.

This morning we looked way up into the desert willow tree and there’s yet another caterpillar.

It was probably  18 to 20 feet in the air, and still big enough I could get this photograph with a telephoto lens. I would say it is five inches long, maybe six. Based on past experience, I know this is a caterpillar of the rustic sphinx moth, Manduca rustica.

Why do we have so many caterpillars right now? Maybe because we had a big rain last week and/or the temperatures have dropped below 100 ° F. In any case, the caterpillars are doing well.

Mystery Seed 42

The mystery seed from this week is a bit more “exotic.”

When they are in the fruit, the seeds are covered with a filmy membrane.

Any guesses what sort of plant these are going to become?

Seed of the Week: Pumpkins

Time to reveal the identity of the mystery seeds from last week.

I really thought the bright orange pulp would give these away. They are pumpkin seeds!

The common name pumpkin is given to several species of related plants. Most often pumpkins are Cucurbita pepo and Cucurbita mixta. Certain varieties of  Cucurbita maxima and Cucurbita moschata may also be called pumpkins. The terms pumpkin and squash can be quite confusing because they are basically varieties of the same thing.

Pumpkins are thought to originate from in the New World. The scientists found some preserved ancient seeds in Mexico, which they identified as pumpkins. (Just think, the ability to identify mystery seeds is important when you are trying to trace the ancestry of plants! And you thought we were just having fun).

Pumpkins are relatively easy to grow if you have plenty of space in your garden.

You can try to save seeds and grow your own pumpkin, but the results might not look anything like what you started with because the plants are often cross pollinated with other varieties. Maybe you’ll come up with the next great type of pumpkin.

The seeds will sprout even when they are fresh from the fruit, they don’t need to overwinter or go through a cold period.

The plant is a long, trailing vine with large, lobed leaves.

Pumpkins have large, orange five-lobed flower.  The flowers are separate, either male or female.
