I’ve got those in my front yard!
– Looks like a Kentucky coffee tree to me. If it is, you’re mighty lucky to have one around, as all their seed-dispersing animal partners went and got themselves extinctified at the end of the Pleistocene. Nowadays they mostly spread via flash floods and the occasional curious cow. Then again, these could just be especially fat locust pods…
Nice site, by the by, and beautiful pictures.
The Kentucky coffee tree is cool, and thanks for the information. That is a good guess. The mystery seeds are somewhat smaller pods and the plants have a limited distribution in North America.
