Our mystery seeds last week were from the common annual flower, yellow cosmos (Cosmos sulphureus).
The flowers of this species are yellow to deep orange in color.
Yellow cosmos supply nectar to pollinators and are sometimes listed as good plants for butterfly gardens.
Because they tend to reseed prolifically, however, they have been listed as invasive weeds in the southeastern United States.
With plants, it is all about location, location, location.
Here in Arizona, we often see large black bees on flowers.
They are female carpenter bees.
This fuzzy blonde-colored bee is roughly the same size as the female carpenter bee above, but is not seen as often.
Any idea what it is?
Although photographs do reveal a lot about seeds, sometimes perspective matters.
Take these seeds in this seed head, for example. You can see what they look like, for the most part.
Now check from this angle. See anything different? What about those “hooks” at the end of each seed? Looking back, they are there in the first photograph, but not nearly as prominent.
