Weekend Science Fun: Phenology

Today let’s look at an opportunity to carry out a citizen science project, and look at some free science education resources from the Internet.

USA National Phenology Network is looking for citizen scientists to help them collect data.

What is phenology? It is the study of the timing of certain measurable events in the life cycles of living creatures. Examples might be time of migration or nesting in particular species of birds, date of flowering in certain plants, or mushroom formation in a certain type of fungus. The occurrence of these events is often related to climate. Spring is a great time to study phenology (in places with distinct seasons), because it is relatively easy to recognize key events, like when lilacs are flowering around your neighborhood.

Why is studying phenology important? Some events, such the the running of sugar maple sap, are significant for people who use it as a source of food. In one study from 1963 to 2003, researchers found the maple trees started running sap on average eight days earlier, which isn’t too much of a problem. The problem was that the trees started to bud (and stopped running the proper quality of sap) 11 days earlier, shortening the season by 10 percent. Other events may impact human health, such as when pollen sheds from certain allergenic plants. Interestingly, not all living things react in the same way to changes in temperature. Some events, particularly those later in the year, may actually be slowed.

In this somewhat long video, some of the members of the network explain what phenology is and how the network came about. Try watching the first part at least. It shows David Bertelsen climbing the same mountain in Arizona that he has climbed for the past 30 years. He diligently records information on some 600 species of plants that he encounters!

Weekend Science Fun: Exploring Elephants

Our science activities have been inspired by a children’s book yet again. This time we’ve been reading Beco’s Big Year:  A Baby Elephant Turns One by Linda Stanek.

Beco is a baby elephant that was born recently at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium. The book is full of information, not only about absolutely adorable Beco, but also about elephants in general. For reviews see Beco’s Big Year at Simply Science and my review at Wrapped In Foil.

1. Activity:  African versus Asian Elephants – Identification

Did you know that there are three different species of elephants in the world today? The three species are African elephants (Loxodonta africana), African forest elephants (Loxodonta cyclotis) and Asian elephants (Elephas maximus).

African elephants have:

  • large floppy ears
  • two pointed areas at the end of the trunk
  • the forehead is flat
  • both males and females have tusks

In contrast, Asian elephants have

  • small ears that don’t reach past their jaws
  • one pointed area at the end of the trunk
  • two large bumps on their foreheads
  • only males have full tusks

Activity 2. “Elephant angels”

Do you see the dusty debris on Beco’s back? That is a common behavior. It is easy to find pictures of elephants throwing dirt, wood chips, hay or straw onto their backs.

Author of the book explains about how when the elephants lay down at night, the keepers can tell where they’ve been based on the piles of debris that come off around them. The keepers call the piles “elephant angels” because they look like the snow angels children make in the snow.

Why do elephants “decorate” themselves? Two common ideas are that the dirt and hay keeps off flies or other parasites, and also that it helps keep the intense sun off their skin. Another suggestion is that it helps them keep warm when it is cold, which would make sense in Columbus, Ohio.

Gather:

  • coloring sheet of an elephant and print it out (Enchanted Learning has some).
  • card stock or manila folder
  • glue
  • scissors
  • paper
  • tape (optional)
  • crayons, chalk or blo pens

Print out the elephant image. Glue it to card stock or an old manila folder. Cut out the outline of the elephant, which forms what is basically a reverse stencil. Lightly tape the stencil on a piece of paper, or hold it firmly in place. Color the area around the stencil. Remove the stencil to reveal the “Elephant angel.”

Use your imagination to come up with other creative ways to get a reverse or “negative” elephant image. Let us know what you come up with.

Activity 3. Behavioral Enrichment

Behavioral enrichment is a way of helping improve the quality of life of animals in captivity by supplying them with items or space to incorporate behaviors commonly found in nature. The elephant handlers are always looking for ideas to make life more interesting for the elephants. For example, they gave Beco a giant blue rubber ball to play with.

In this video Beco is playing with a block of ice shaped like a birthday cake that the handlers gave him for his first birthday. The blocks of ice offer something new for Beco to investigate.

At our zoo in Phoenix, Arizona we used to have an elephant who painted pictures, holding the brush with her trunk. The elephant’s name was Ruby.

Can you think of ways to give an elephant behavioral enrichment? Write down your ideas and then research what other zoos have done to keep their elephants active and interested.

Raising Snails and Science Projects

In answer to a question that came in this week about raising snails, I have put together a few resources for you.

We raised brown garden snails, which are a commonly considered to be a pest species. We kept them in gallon-sized jars (sun tea jars work well) with a fabric (light cotton) cover. The cover was simply held on with a rubber band. We tried moist soil in one container and wet paper towels in the other. The paper towels were easier to clean and the snails sometimes used the towels for food. We were vigilant to keep the towels moist.

The soil was more of an issue, because we soon had an overgrowth of springtails and sowbugs that we had accidentally added with our garden soil. The soil was also harder to keep free of rotting vegetable matter. (Hence the extra critters). Snails need to be cleaned frequently.

You will need to add sources of calcium, like egg shells. We gave the snails egg shells that we washed out. We also gave them a number of different leafy vegetables.

The snails laid their eggs in the paper towels or under the soil. In no time we had a lot of snails (you probably should have an “exit plan” such as friends that are willing to take some off your hands). Taking care of snails and watching their life cycle was a great way to learn about a creature so different from our fuzzy pet friends.
